Buying a Watch Online Sight-Unseen: How Guarantees Should Work

Most luxury watches now sell online, sight-unseen — and that's perfectly fine, provided the right protections are in place. Four things matter: the watch is authenticated before it ships, you get an inspection period and a clear return policy, you pay through a secure method, and on higher-value deals you have the option of escrow. Get those and buying a watch you've never held becomes low-risk.
Authentication before it ships
The most important protection is that the watch is verified genuine and correct before it ever leaves the seller. Ask how they authenticate, and request the reference and serial number plus detailed, watch-specific photos — not stock images. Knowing the basic tells yourself helps too; our guide on how to spot a fake Rolex covers what a proper check looks like.

An inspection period and clear returns
You should be able to inspect the watch on arrival and return it within a stated window if it isn't as described. Read the return policy before you buy — a reputable seller states it plainly, including who covers return shipping and how refunds work. A seller who won't put a return policy in writing is a seller to walk away from.
Secure payment — and escrow for big deals
Pay with a traceable, protected method such as a credit card, and avoid wiring cash to a seller you don't know. On high-value purchases, a regulated escrow service like Escrow.com holds your funds until you've received and inspected the watch, releasing payment only when you're satisfied — a neutral layer of protection for both sides.

Signs of a seller you can trust
The trustworthy signals are consistent: transparent pricing, detailed real photos of the actual watch, clear written policies, verifiable reviews, and responsive, patient communication. It's also worth understanding who you're buying from in the first place — our guide to authorized dealers, the grey market, and independents explains the differences.
